For Any Prosecutor To Target An Individual Rather Than A Crime Is Wrong!

Dear Readers:

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has hired one of Bharara’s top deputies, Howard Master, “to focus specifically on issues involving the Trump administration.”

Many of my Democratic friends celebrated this announcement, but I admit it brought chills up my spine. The memories of  a special prosecutor targeting President Clinton and searching for a crime no matter how small or petty is still fresh in my memory bank. Hundreds of White House employees who incurred thousands of dollars worth of legal bills are still working to pay off their debts. Have we forgotten the days when special prosecutors were crawling all over HUD, Agriculture, and Commerce looking for a crime and reminding us of the Les Miserables days of Victor Hugo?

I am hardly a fan of our current President or his administration, but are we prepared to become a country where our Halls of Justice become Halls of Inquisition? There are ways to defeat the current administration, and I am all for it. Grass roots organizing to get the almost fifty percent of voters who stayed home from the polls is a good start. For senior statesmen to speak out about the importance of institutions and truth telling is another. But, let’s not once again travel the path of using our criminal justice system for political purposes. That path has already been traveled to our nation’s detriment.
