Supremes Say Its Okay For The Police To Make A “Reasonable” Mistake Of Law

Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court said that if a search and seizure is the result of an honest and reasonable mistake of law by a police officer then the search doesn’t violate the U.S. Constitution. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Maybe it does to you, maybe it doesn’t but let’s hope that if you or I make an honest mistake about the law we would get similar treatment. For example no speed limit signs in a small town and you get pulled over for going 40 in a 25 mile per hour zone. Do you think the local sheriff will accept “I didn’t know” or “I thought the limit was forty” as a reason not to get a ticket?

Just an observation.
