Epilogue To 2015 Paperback Edition

Few people get second chances, but a fortunate few are given that opportunity.

When I handwrote the first draft of Friends in Cumberland prison in 1996, I said:

‘I hope, especially for Hillary, that the next stage of her life will bring her the freedom to be who she really is. For almost twenty years, she’s had to be a First Lady first, although she’s certainly had her share of accomplishments. She’s been Bill Clinton’s wife. I know that that narrow image has been a painful sacrifice for her—not because she didn’t want Bill to succeed as he has, or because she didn’t want to be married to him. But because she—like so many other women—wants to show that a woman can love a man and still have her own identity, her own independence, her own important role in society.’

I certainly didn’t know the specifics then, but in the last twenty years she has become a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, an almost successful candidate for the Democratic nomination to be President of the United States in 2008, a grandmother, and now the front-runner to be elected President in 2016. I’d say she certainly has fulfilled my prediction, and then some.”

HighPlaces_CVR_Mar17Why the reissue now, others have asked. The answer is my publisher, Beaufort Books, felt that during this long election cycle my different view of the Clinton’s is an important counter balance to all the negative books being published about them. Friends In High Places has never been available in paperback or in ebooks, and the previously published hardback books available are limited. It was an extremely difficult book for me to write, because I had to be honest about myself and my failures. I hope you find it insightful.
